Israelis celebrate; Palestinians mourn

by Helen Thomas
Monday, May 19, 2008
The Israelis are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the creation of the nation of Israel.

The Palestinians have only to mourn the loss of their land and the oppression they have suffered as refugees in camps and caves since 1948, their life under military occupation and their humiliation at myriad Israeli checkpoints.

by Helen Thomas, Aspen Daily News Columnist
Monday, May 12, 2008
Some readers resented The Washington Post for publishing an Associated Press photograph of a critically wounded Iraqi child being lifted from the rubble of his home in Baghdad’s Sadr City “after a U.S. airstrike.”

Two-year-old Ali Hussein later died in a hospital.

A salute is due Adm. William Fallon, who tried to prevent a wider war with Iran.

Bush and musical diplomacy

by Helen Thomas, Aspen Daily News Columnist
Monday, March 10, 2008
Let us hope that the next president of the United States knows some history.

And let us hope that the next president will know that the United States cannot call all the shots, or pick and choose which leader-dictator we will talk to or decide which countries can have unconventional weapons.

Iraq belongs to the Iraqis

by Helen Thomas, Aspen Daily News Columnist
Monday, March 3, 2008
The successor to President Bush has a clear-cut choice: Saving lives or saving face.

Bush wants to leave to the next president the burden of ending the debacle he started five years ago when he ordered the invasion of Iraq under false pretenses, against a people who had done us no harm.

Horoscopes

  • Aries
    • Optimism greets you around nearly every corner. Do what you enjoy, as long as you don't spend too much time alone. Your sense of relaxation and fun emerges. Confusion surrounds communication and plans. Tap into your sense of humor. Tonight: Go for spontaneity. Go for a party.

  • Taurus
    • Pressure builds when and where you judge it shouldn't. You might have very little choice but to step up to the plate. You could be overwhelmed by an expenditure or someone's needs. You might need to temper this person's  requests for now. Tonight: Others will follow your lead.

  • Gemini
    • Your creativity emerges, and you find answers. You might wonder why people seem out of sorts when really there are so many options. Don't jinx yourself; think positively. Someone could change his or her mind at the last minute. Tonight: Having a lot of fun.

  • Cancer
    • Easy does it. You are especially vulnerable right now. Do you realize what someone wants? Are you willing to say yes? Close relating and discussion surround a potential purchase. Lighten up in your dealings. Tonight: Listen to a close friend or loved one. His or her logic might not be off.

  • Leo
    • Others seek you out. This in itself is not a new experience, yet there is a different quality. Clearly others really appreciate all you do for them. Don't read into a situation or make more of it than necessary. Tonight: Where you can visit the most people!

  • Virgo
    • Kick back. Even if you decide to get some work done, follow a leisurely, quiet pace. Whatever you do, don't get uptight. A misunderstanding happens easily. Realize that it is not intended. Let others know how much you appreciate them. Tonight: Put your feet up.

  • Libra
    • How you let someone know you have had enough could change considerably. You might be quite taken by someone who is amusing and caring all at once. You are likely to wear your heart on your sleeve. Enjoy the possibilities. Tonight: A good time is had by all.

  • Scorpio
    • Someone might distract you quite a bit. No one says you need to be directed every day of your life. Communication has depth and richness. Many opportunities head in your direction. Tonight: Order in Chinese. Or would you prefer pizza?

  • Sagittarius
    • Speak your mind. Your expression will reveal exactly what you are thinking anyway. Someone might be startled, but at the same time, this person feels that he or she now can be more open. Encourage spontaneity. Tonight: Say yes to an invitation.

  • Capricorn
    • You indulge, whether you need to buy that item or get extra munchies is your call. You would prefer not to think about it. Remember, there is always a tomorrow. Your intentions might not be read clearly by another. Verbalize. Tonight: Let your hair down.

  • Aquarius
    • You might want to rethink a decision or do something differently. Your mind might be on overtime. At the moment, don't share all of these very different thoughts with others. Absorb, think and understand. You need to be on top of your game. Tonight: All smiles.

  • Pisces
    • Everyone has an opportunity to make different choices. A friend might be wavering, and you might not be sure which direction to head in. Remain true to yourself in your dealings. Keep your thoughts to yourself -- for now. Tonight: Do not push!
