I got on the bucket close to 10 a.m., and powder hunting was easy. You could be on groomers with chopped up snow and make a quick turn into a patch of trees for fresh track and face shots. The snow was a bit heavy underneath with a top layer of light and fluffy powder. The snow just kept coming.

Full Story »Mon, 03/30/2009 - 1:26pm Baker Boyd (pictured above) and Kevin Frazezier, both of Aspen, took first in the second annual Helly Hansen Battle in the Bowls on Sunday, March 29. Forty-six teams skied the many bowls of Aspen Highlands on a course designed by Helly Hansen and Aspen/Snowmass team athlete Chris Davenport. Athletes could take any route they desired as long as they completed every run listed on the course.

It always impresses me how skiing through the pow causes me to breathe fairly heavily. After consecutive days of corduroy I welcomed the feeling of screaming thighs and a beating heart along with the feeling of flight and butterflies in your stomach that only powder can bring. My only regret from today is that I did not get first chair.

After what seemed like a prolongued drought, powder has returned to local mountains, and how. Many were doubtful but this storm has so far exceeded our expectations, with easily over a foot on the exposed slopes of Aspen Mountain and a good two feet in the Dumps.

And with temperatures finally dropping to proper winter levels, it’s enough to make conditions — as one of our staff described it — “five-star.”

Full Story »Mon, 01/19/2009 - 2:27pm So Aspen has been completely void of the white stuff for more than a week now, with the first chance (20 percent) of snow falling Thursday afternoon. What this means for most locals is a couple of runs aftern noon, then a few après-ski drinks while enjoying the sun before it disappears below Shadow Mountain.
