Senior center closes doors for roof repair

The Pitkin County Senior Center closed its doors Monday after a ceiling leak that was covered with plastic developed a mold. Air quality tests are being conducted by Ecos Environmental Professionals.

"Ecos is using a huge fan they call an "air scrubber" to pull air out of the building," said senior services director Marty Ames. "It is so noisy we couldn't hear each other talk. We had to leave the building while mitigation is under way."

The senior services staff is relocating temporarily to the Health and Human Services building on Castle Creek Road next to Aspen Valley Hospital. The Pitkin County Senior Center will be closed until March 10. The air in the building will be re-tested Feb. 29.

All senior lunches and exercise classes will be canceled for two weeks, with the exception of the "balance class." Transportation service will continue uninterrupted and officials say they are working to maintain as many other services as possible.
