GLEASON AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP

Aspen resident Gary Gleason was recently named a Fulbright Scholarship recipient, a grant which he will use to teach and study civil protection at the Polytechnic Institute in Leiria, Portugal this fall.

In Portugal, he will teach one graduate and two undergraduate courses focusing on homeland security, both in the United States and abroad, as well as researching its effectiveness there.

Gleason runs a consulting firm, Communique, which most recently worked with the Federal Transit Administration to develop emergency response procedures for rural areas. Prior to that, he also spent five years with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), working on the communications and training side of more natural disasters.

He has a bachelor’s from the University of Colorado in journalism and mass communication.

KOMEN ASPEN NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

Tracey Lynn Samdahl has been named the new president for the Aspen Affiliate of SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE. In her new position, she will oversee the organization’s goals to provide breast cancer programs to Roaring Fork Valley residents, as well as those living between Silt and Vail.

Samdahl previously served on Komen Aspen’s board of directors. Influential in both business and the community, she helped to develop the Shaw Regional Cancer Center in Vail.

SPORTSCASTER HAS ASPEN ROOTS

Drew Goodman, the play-by-play man for the Colorado Rockies on FOX SPORTS NETWORK - ROCKY MOUNTAIN, has been named the Colorado Sportscaster of the Year for the fifth time. Goodman began his television journalism career in Aspen. “I sent tapes out all over the country and my first gig was at a TV station in Aspen. To make ends meet, I got a job training people at the Aspen Club, where I saw everybody from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Jane Fonda to Reggie Jackson,” Goodman told The Journal News in New York. Goodman, 44, cited Woody Creek resident Bob Beattie’s reports on “Wide World Of Sports” as a catalyst for his interest in sportscasting. Goodman also did play-by-play announcing for the Denver Nuggets on Fox Sports before the team moved to Altitude, a TV station created by the Stan Kroenke, who owns the Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche. Goodman, who is entering his seventh season as the Colorado Rockies play-by-play man, will be honored at the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and Hall of Fame on May 3-5, in Salisbury, N.C.
