A structure fire just off Stark Mesa Road south of Carbondale on Sunday destroyed a barn with attached greenhouse, a chicken shed and an adjacent horse shed, Carbondale Fire District spokesman Doug Davis reported.
“The cause of the fire is under investigation,” Davis said.
The fire, at 0288 Cabin Drive, was reported at 11:54 a.m. and declared under control at 12:30 p.m. by
District Deputy Chief Carl Smith. Initial reports from a neighbor indicated the barn was “fully involved” Davis said.
The Carbondale Fire District responded with three engines, two tenders and 20 firefighters. They were soon joined by an engine-tender from Basalt carrying five firefighters. A Pitkin County sheriff’s deputy also responded to the scene and assisted.
Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent garage and residence.
Mop-up operations continued until 3:30 p.m.
