Remembering Lathrop

Editor:

The news of Lathrop Strang’s death reached me while I was on vacation more than 3,000 miles away, and spread rapidly amongst the core Aspen locals there at the same time.

Lathrop was a bit older than me, the same age as my big sisters. I remember him first from Aspen Country Day School and well beyond. A feared athlete, and one of those guys you always wish you could be more like. He attracted people of all ages to him with his gleaming smile and easy going nature. He always looked as if he knew some amazing fabulous incredible secret he was just dying to tell you, but he wasn’t allowed to. No secret really, that’s just the way he carried himself.

I recall the time last summer while doing business at the sod farm on Strang Ranch when Lathrop graciously invited me into the house to say hello to his family. I was honored and humbled by the experience. I sat at the kitchen table answering and asking questions, listening to stories and catching up with one of the dearest families in our valley. It was no small wonder Lathrop was the way he was, growing up there on the ranch. Stepping into the house was like stepping back in time. Colorado the way it’s supposed to be — a simple mountain life where hard work, hard play and family were the benchmarks of happiness.

The half hour visit had such a profound effect on me, I raced home to tell anyone with ears about my experience. I will never forget that short encounter as long as I live.

Lathrop has an amazing group of friends, a true testament to what type of person he was, and who he attracted. My thoughts are with all of those friends, and the Strang family.

We miss you, Lathrop.
