A car drove through the storefront of Mr. C’s Liquors in Carbondale on Monday night, taking out its front window, a cooler and bottles but not injuring anyone inside the store.

“The damage was fairly extensive,” said Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling, whose department responded to the crash at 7:50 p.m. on Cinco de Mayo. “It wasn’t minor.”

The driver, a 61-year-old Carbondale man, was taken to Valley View Hospital. Investigating police found the man “too incoherent” to tell them the cause of the accident. Schilling said it was unclear whether the man’s confusion was medically or alcoholically driven.

Despite the damage, the liquor store opened for business Tuesday as staff cleaned up the mess.

There were scant other incidents in the valley related to the annual celebration of the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla.

In Aspen, police responded to a call of a black van running over bicycles outside of The Cantina, site of the city’s most popular Cinco de Mayo celebration. On the scene, police found no bikes were damaged and could not track down the black van.

They also made one drunken driving arrest around 1 a.m. at Castle Creek and Doolittle roads. The Snowmass and Basalt authorities reported no incident calls, and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office made two unrelated warrant arrests.
