The man who drowned in the Colorado River on Monday has been identified as Richard Banks, 45, of Las Vegas.
Banks and his girlfriend had recently bought a kayak before he put in solo at South Canyon, according to the Garfield County Coroner’s Office. His girlfriend planned to pick him up in Rifle.
A witness called 911 reporting a man in the river, and officials from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and local fire department responded, following him visually as he moved swiftly down the river before they were able to find a spot to pull him out.
Banks was transported to Valley View Hospital, where medical officials tried to revive him before he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy found that no alcohol was involved, the coroner’s office reported, and the man was wearing a life vest, although it might have been the wrong size.
Local rivers are running high and swiftly this week; the Colorado River at South Canyon is at 14,000 cubic feet per second.
