THE SCORE — Haefliger returns to Aspen

Andreas Haefliger will make his much-anticipated return visit to Aspen to enthrall everyone with chamber music from Brahms and Schubert at his “Evening With” today. Brahms and Schubert make a wonderful combination of lyricism and song. Joining Andreas will be the Ying Quartet and baritone Christian Gerhaher.

Joseph Kalichstein and Leonard Slatkin headline Friday’s chamber symphony concert with works by American composers Peter Mennin and Aaron Copland, with a Beethoven piano concerto (No. 2) added into the mix for good measure. Friday with the chamber symphony is a special occasion for Joseph Kalichstein: It marks two anniversaries — his Aspen debut and his tenure on the AMFS piano faculty.

Saturday night you will be equally transported by the music of Robert Schumann, the voice of baritone Christian Gerhaher and the pianism of Ingo Metzmacher. Robert Schumann presides over the recital by the vocal interpretive phenom called Christian Gerhaher that is nearing sell-out. Be a part of Aspen history by attending this concert. The words, the music, the voice and the performance will stay with you for years to come.

Sunday, the Aspen Festival Orchestra welcomes conductor Ludovic Morlot and homegrown violinist Gil Shaham in a program that parallels the school’s “Once Upon a Time” theme for this summer. Dvorak’s The Noon Day Witch is a stirring tone poem; Shaman will romance the festival with the passion of Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, full of Armenian folk tunes designed to captivate and dazzle with his virtuosity; and passion will come to full pitch in Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3, the second half of the program.

Finally, the Aspen Opera Theater Center does yeoman’s duty in keeping up the vocal honors at this festival. The quality of the singers and the musical training and production values are unequaled.

Hansel and Gretel sung in English is the next production. Be a part of music history, attend concerts regularly, you will find yourself saying, “I heard once upon a time in Aspen.”

The Score is provided by the Aspen Music Festival and School.
