A slight schedule shift has been announced for the Aspen Winternational women’s World Cup ski races to accommodate the European TV audience.
Originally slated to begin the Friday after Thanksgiving and conclude on Saturday, the event will now open on Saturday, Nov. 29, with a giant slalom, followed by a slalom on Sunday. Both races will air live on primetime in European markets and on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. on NBC, the Olympic network, in the United States.
“Aspen is one of America’s premier venues for alpine ski racing,” said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Vice President of Events Calum Clark in a prepared statement. “Live European coverage in key times for our alpine World Cups is a critical element in the ongoing success of the events here in the U.S. and the World Cup tour as a whole.”
This year’s event marks 40 years of World Cup racing in Aspen. Aspen Mountain was a part of the tour’s inaugural season during the winter of 1967-68.
A 40th anniversary celebration featuring Andrea Mead Lawrence and a U.S. Ski Team autograph signing will kick off the Winternational on Friday night at the Wheeler Opera House. A free outdoor concert and fireworks conclude the festivities on Saturday night.
