What a difference a day can make.

That seemed to be the case for the Glenwood Springs High School girls basketball team at the Demons Invitational Tournament this past weekend.

After opening their own tournament with a nail-biting, two-point loss on Friday, the Demons regrouped and turned in a pair of dominating performances on Saturday.

The opening-round loss was a back-and-forth struggle all game. Demons player Katrina Selsor had a career night, scoring 29 points, but it was not enough as Glenwood Springs lost to Faith Christian 49-47.

Despite the gut-wrenching loss, Demons coach Brian Derby found a silver lining and praised Selsor’s play.

“She’s really stepping up and doing a good job for us right now,” Derby said of the 5-foot, 11-inch senior. “She pretty much plays everywhere. She handles the ball, plays in the post, scores and gets rebounds.”

On Saturday morning, Glenwood Springs returned to its home basketball court with a different attitude.

The Demons opened the day by defeating Woodland Park 54-43 in a game that was not as close as the score indicated.

The Demons held a 14-point advantage at halftime and Woodland Park got a majority of its points in the fourth quarter after Glenwood Springs starters were watching from the sidelines.

Laura Young led the Demons with 13 points while teammates McKenzie Kuhn and Selsor added 12 apiece.

In its second game of the day, Selsor and Kuhn combined for 33 points as Glenwood Springs thumped Eagle 58-39.

“On Friday we didn’t play up to our potential,” Derby said. “But we came back out Saturday and played much better defense. And that’s what’s going to carry us this year.”

The Demons improve to 4-2 and return to action on Friday at home against Denver Christian at 6 p.m.
