Autopsy results released Monday disclosed that Andrew Mazeika shot and killed his wife on Saturday with a handgun at their Missouri Heights home, before shooting himself.
Mazeika, 68, died from his self-inflicted injuries at Valley View Hospital later in the day.
His wife, Judi Mazeika, 54, was dead on the front lawn when Eagle County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene.
Sheriff’s detectives had said Sunday that the incident appeared to be a murder-suicide, which the county coroner confirmed Monday.
The rare local murder is believed to have occurred Saturday morning. A Vega Drive neighbor called authorities around 11:30 a.m. to report screaming followed by gunshots from the Mazeika home.
Eagle County reported no history of domestic violence involving the couple. They had owned a home in the midvalley neighborhood, between El Jebel and Carbondale, since 1988, according to Eagle County property records.
The couple had an adult daughter, who was not present at the time of the shooting. Both of the deceased had worked seasonally for the Aspen Skiing Co.
