Multiple fire trucks, an ambulance and law enforcement responded to a fire in an apartment at the Hunter Creek Condominiums on Monday that remains under investigation.
The fire broke out in the bedroom of a unit on the second floor of the complex’s 900 building around 2 p.m. A neighbor living below the unit, who saw smoke escaping from the bedroom’s window, called 911, setting off a response that temporarily closed Lone Pine Road.
No one was injured in the fire, and damage was mostly contained to the bedroom where it is believed to have started.
Aspen Fire Marshal Ed Van Walraven declined to discuss details of the fire or speculate on a cause, saying the matter is subject to a police investigation.
Detective Walter Chi of the Aspen Police Department said officers are still trying to locate and interview one of the residents of the unit. Whether that person was present when the fire started is unknown, Chi said.
Police interviewed another resident of the unit, who was not there when the fire started, on Monday evening. Both people had recently moved into the unit, Chi said.
“We don’t know whether we have a case or not,” he said, referring to a potential arson investigation.
The incident was the first structure fire in a while in Aspen. The handful of other recent incidents include a 2008 fire at the Castle Ridge apartments sparked by a cigarette butt, and a fire that destroyed the Holiday House employee housing project that was under construction in 2007.
Community safety officers Charlie Martin and Dave Paschal were the first to arrive on scene at Hunter Creek on Monday and confirmed the fire by feeling the hot apartment door and seeing smoke. The central smoke alarm system in the building was activated, and they proceeded to evacuate residents.
Responding firefighters from the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department encountered heavy smoke in the apartment and quickly extinguished the fire, which was contained to the bedroom. A ladder truck was used to peer into adjacent apartments to ensure the fire did not spread.
