Pitkin County Library is the intellectual heart of our community. To support the library’s proposed expansion is a wise investment in the health of our community. The carefully crafted plan includes improvements that will keep pace with the evolving services libraries are depended upon to provide, measures that address the building’s shortcomings, and strategic timing that will economize by coordinating with repair work on the parking garage.
I began to truly know the value of our library during my children’s pre-school years, when I worked to instill in them an early love for reading. Thanks to the wonderful children’s collection, it worked; I have two voracious readers on my hands.
Still, as we read and learned about the greater world around us, I often wished for windows that looked out beyond Mill Street at pavement level, an incorporated story time area with natural light, a safer outdoor entrance area, and an adjacent outdoor space that was inviting to spend time in. My kids’ wish list includes bike parking convenient to the children’s entrance.
All of this and so much more is part of the proposed library expansion. The library will continue to be a cornerstone in our family’s life, right up through college scholarship research and beyond. A great deal of time, energy, and thoughtful consideration has gone into the proposal that is before us now. I urge you to vote yes on 5A and 5B to build the next chapter for our library.
