Local woman, age 34, found dead in Aspen

A 34-year-old woman described as a longtime local was found dead at a residence in Aspen on Wednesday.

Aspen police received a call about an “unattended death,” meaning a death outside the care of a physician, at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. When officers responded to the call, which came from a residence at 501 W. Main St., Rachel Ortega was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities are not saying what they believe the cause of death to be. The Pitkin County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy today, after which more information could be released, Aspen Police Department spokeswoman Blair Weyer said. She also declined to say who called police to notify them of the situation, as an investigation is pending into Ortega’s death.

“We are investigating it thoroughly,” Weyer said, noting Ortega’s young age.

Weyer said Ortega has family in the area, and has been a longtime resident, although she didn’t know how long.

Facebook postings on the pages of Ortega and others note that she recently entered into a romantic relationship. According to the postings, her significant other was planning to return from a vacation this week, and Ortega wrote how excited she was to see him.
