This is one heck of a place, so be thankful

As the winter season ramps up, we often find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of trying to juggle our work, play and family commitments. It can be difficult to remain positive when the stresses confront us and work demands long hours, sometimes on holidays.

But we have to remember why we are here and choose to live in the Roaring Fork Valley. The Aspen Daily News staff took a moment to offer what we are thankful for. Sometimes it’s the little things that matter, and having an attitude of gratitude should remain a part of healthy living every day, not just on Thanksgiving. Here are some of what we believe are shared values among our fellow community members. We are grateful for:

• The most beautiful commute in the country, Glenwood to Aspen. Riding the bus is relaxing and scenic. No car is needed in Aspen. You can walk everywhere.

• Buying a sweet pair of skis at the ski swap and the money benefiting the Aspen School District.

• The ski shop employees who are always willing to help you sniff out some good, lightly used gear to fit your budget.

• Snowmakers! Limited turns are better than none.

• A top-notch public education system.

• Hiking up Smuggler under an early-morning pink and blue sky and sledding down fast with AC/DC blaring in your ear buds.

• Skinning up Tiehack listening to Aspen Public Radio in the stillness of the morning.

• Aspen Community Theatre, which shows how a small town like this can pool its resources and talent and produce quality live entertainment.

• The volunteerism here is unmatched by any small town.

• The 360-degree views at 12,000 feet.

• Riding up a chairlift with a visitor and telling them you are on your lunch break.

• To live in a place where only bikes and skis get stolen and your car doors remain unlocked.

• The friendly people who smile and say hello even though they are complete strangers.

• The simple small-town pleasures of knowing you are likely to run into a friend or neighbor most of the time you walk down the street or into the grocery store.

• Free yoga at the Sundeck, now up to four days a week.

• All the trails around the area so you never have to take the same jog or hike twice, but are happy to do so if you want.

• The community, which will come together in any given situation, despite our differences.

• To be able to golf and ski in the same day, spring or fall.

• To live in a place people dream of, and spend a lot of money to visit.

• Our breathtaking surroundings, clean air and clean water.

• The sweeping views from Highland Bowl.

• The quietness and quirkiness of off-season.

• Winter, spring, summer and fall.

• The brilliant minds among us.

• Floating down our amazing rivers.

• For the opportunity to grow up or raise a family in such a beautiful area.

• The close-knit community and a vibe that is not felt in many places.
