The pop star Adele may have a great voice, Tina Maze’s coach pointed out to her recently, but the Grammy-winning singer definitely can’t ski as fast as the Slovenian who took first place in Saturday’s giant slalom on Aspen Mountain.
Maze, 29, who is in Aspen this weekend for World Cup racing, however, is giving Adele a run on the radio in her homeland, where the racer’s song “My Way is My Decision” is currently topping the pop charts.
“My priority is my skiing, of course,” she said at a post-race press conference on Saturday. “But it’s so sweet when you can do something else.”
She said she recorded the song and shot its video “really quickly” this year, just for fun. She grew up playing piano, as well as skiing. The song features Maze singing and playing piano on an up-tempo pop tune, sung in English. Both the song and video were released in October, just before World Cup competition began.
She’s not planning to make any more records, for now, focusing instead on skiing records.
“I would love to,” she said of making more music. “I had so much fun. But now there’s not so much time for that.”
The video shows a glammed-up Maze singing and dancing in a warehouse, packing her racing gear into a suitcase and, at one point, mock playing guitar on a Stockli ski.
“Is there any better way than with a song to remind my fans at the beginning of the season that ‘My Rock’n’Roll’ is about to begin?” she wrote on her blog in October.
Maze’s win on Saturday was her second straight first-place finish in giant slalom, which she celebrated with a cartwheel at the finish line. She also took two silver medals at the 2010 Olympics.
She competes in the slalom race today at 10 a.m.
