Sydney, the bandana-wearing and once-controversial mail-carrying golden retriever who accompanied mailman Terry Trish on his route, died in September after a fight with cancer.
She was 14 and had walked the downtown postal route of Aspen with Trish for 12-plus years. The pair’s daily stops in shops and businesses downtown became a cherished routine of local life.
In 2003, the U.S. Postal Service ordered Trish to stop bringing Sydney on the route because a national U.S. Postal Service policy prohibits doing so. A local uproar ensued, and eventually brought Sydney back on the downtown route.
