Opulence is nothing new in Aspen but when an individual rents out an entire hotel, that is not something considered routine in this ski town.

Wall Street executive Jeffrey Verschleiser in January rented out the entire Hotel Jerome for more than four days to celebrate his daughter’s bat mitzvah.

Verschleiser rented the historic hotel, including the popular J-Bar, for more than $500,000, and up to as much as $1 million, according to sources.

The family also rented out the publicly-owned Aspen Recreation Center for one night over that weekend for a reported $7,000.

At the time, Verschleiser was named in a lawsuit against former Bear Stearns & Co. that claimed the company allegedly took millions of dollars from clients in the name of profits and bonuses.

Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi, who has extensively covered the financial corruption that shattered the national economy, wrote in his blog during that January weekend that Verschleiser’s actions in Aspen “crystallized the moral dementia of modern Wall Street in one little vignette.”

Those working in the hotel for the celebration, however, said the family and their guests were nothing but gracious, nice and generous during their stay.
