I didn’t ask for much this Christmas and received just what I wanted in a mini-speaker system from iHome Audio.
I use a much larger Bose system at home, a device that produces wondrous sound but isn’t exactly convenient for camping.
Outdoor excursions are the main reason I wanted a mini-speaker system. It passed an indoors test — the system didn’t disrupt an acrimonious Uno game with relatives — with flying colors.
The iHM61 Speaker System, I think, will be perfect for sitting around a campfire: not loud enough to disrupt the temporary neighbors but adequate volume for those sitting nearby. Seal it in a plastic bag, and it would be perfect for rafting, as well. Or take it on a hut trip — it only weighs 3.2 ounces and is just over 2 inches high — and blast smooth jazz at your friends until they throw you out into the cold.
Another conceivable use is to break it out on the gondola, particularly when someone is obnoxiously talking on a cell phone or discussing their stock portfolio.
The speaker connects to a computer or other USB power source via the included USB cable to recharge the internal lithium ion battery, according to ihomeaudio.com.
Expanding the speaker offers two speakers and supposedly more bass, though I thought the difference was negligible.
For those watching a movie on a laptop, it can also boost the maximum volume without needing ear buds.
For what it’s worth, of the 838 reviews on amazon.com, 619 people gave the device five stars, a rating that I would echo.
