River North Dance Returns

Mark your calendars and get your tickets now for an ideal off-piste activity during next week’s Winter X Games.

If you’re looking to take a break from the extreme action — or avoid it entirely — Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has the perfect remedy, with two performances from the visiting River North Dance Chicago.

The Windy City-born company returns to Aspen with one show for kids and one for adults on Saturday Jan. 26.

They bring an electrifying fusion of modern, jazz, Latin and popular dance to the Aspen District Theatre, with the accessible yet dynamic River North style that’s catapulted them from a local Chicago dance troupe to one of the country’s most dynamic, best-loved professional companies.

The evening performance is expected to include at least six short pieces, ranging from River North artistic director Frank Chaves’ conceptually innovative “Forbidden Boundaries” — including the use of an elastic, ever-expanding shirt prop — to pieces by ascendant young choreographers and some of international renown.

River North’s hometown Chicago Tribune has called them “Purveyors of a silky, sensual brand of user-friendly dance.”

Celebrated for creating vital connections between dancer and audience as well as presenting gutsy and entertaining repertoire, River North combines athletic prowess and artistic perspective with bold, theatrical flair.

Founded in 1989, River North has grown to become an internationally acclaimed company that embodies a true flavor of “Americana” in its versatile repertoire. Under the artistic direction of Chaves, the company demonstrates depth and sophistication with a commitment to creating an accessible, enriching experience for audiences.

Chaves aims for audiences to feel the complete spectrum of human emotions in a single evening, and leaves them feeling joyful and exhilarated at the end of each program. It boasts an eclectic, dynamic, jazz-based contemporary repertoire.

Along with stops in Aspen, the company has participated in the IV International Ballet Festival in Cali, Columbia in 2010, the Busan International Dance Festival in Korea in June 2011, and toured to Germany and Switzerland on an 11-city tour as well as an 17-city tour throughout Russia in the spring of 2012.
