Unstable people may indeed acquire firearms, as Brandon Toomey points out in his letter to the editor (“Guns protect us from tyranny,” Aspen Daily News, Jan. 9). They often get them by borrowing, stealing or some other method not involving background checks. For example, when homes are broken into, what is the first thing taken and possibly used against the homeowner?
Furthermore, it was stated that 99.9 percent of gun owners are responsible. How is this responsibility exhibited? I, like most gun owners, do not have my guns adequately secured from break-ins and theft. Solution? Fewer guns and limitations on the type. A perceived need for assault weapons, machine guns and rocket launchers is a red herring.
