Has it been tough to find full-time work? Were your wages cut or haven’t really gone up? Did you try or are trying to sell your home, and can’t? Do you have any local friends who are worried they are losing everything they worked so hard for? If yes; you need to attend the City Council meeting next Monday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m.
The city’s latest proposal to treble housing impact fees will make your situation worse. This is a sure job killer. Worse; any money acquired from this scheme will be used to build and sell even more affordable housing.
In our recalibrated economy, there is more ownership housing than there are full-time jobs. A surplus of housing to jobs means employers don’t have to increase wages to get good people. A surplus of price-controlled housing in a desirable place like Aspen attracts even more people. So the next time you apply for that great job, instead of three other qualified applicants there will be six other highly qualified competitors.
This harebrained idea can cause nothing but harm. Show up and give council an earful.
