First lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are expected to visit the Aspen area over the holiday weekend, according to sources.

It is unclear who they will be traveling with and few details were available about the trips, other than Biden is expected to be staying in Snowmass Village, according to sources familiar with the visit who asked not to be identified.

Last year, Obama came to Aspen over the President’s Day Weekend with her daughters for a ski vacation. She reportedly stayed at the home of Jim and Paula Crown, owners of the Aspen Skiing Co. The Obama family skied Buttermilk, where the Crowns own a home.

Obama was in Aspen in July 2011 when she spoke at the Crowns’ residence as part of a joint fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee and President Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign.

In her 28-minute talk, Obama thanked the Crowns of Chicago — whom she described as personal friends — for hosting the event. She touted her husband’s accomplishments, highlighting that he took over an economy “on the brink of collapse” and nurtured it into “one starting to grow again.”

Biden made a surprise appearance at the opening ceremonies for the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass Village in March of 2011.

The clinic aims to rehabilitate and enrich the lives of disabled veterans through adaptive skiing, as well as other adaptive sports that run the gamut from curling to rock climbing.

Biden introduced to the room of about 400 disabled veterans his wife, grandchildren and son, who has served in the military.

The family were in the village on a trip characterized as a ski vacation.
