Z.G. was conflicted last Sunday, deciding between going to see the great New Orleans brass masters of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at the Wheeler Opera House or staying home and watching the Grammys.
He decided on the latter, and was more than a little surprised to see Preservation Hall Jazz Band leader Ben Jaffe and his squad performing on stage at the awards ceremony, in Los Angeles, with the Black Keys and Dr. John. Simultaneously, the folks at the Wheeler posted a photo on Facebook of “The Preservation Hall Jazz Band” playing on their stage.
That’s some funky bayou voodoo — being two places at once.
The Wheeler’s Gram Slaton was surprised to hear Monday that the band had simultaneously played L.A. and Aspen. The band’s manager explained on Monday that they split the primary members of the band between the Grammys and Aspen — sending four members to L.A. and four to Aspen. They added an “alternate” member to the Aspen crew, to fill out the band. Good enough. But this is A-town and we expect nothing less than the A-team, and certainly not the B-team.
