n a town driven by outdoor activities, we tend to spend a lot of time and money making sure we have the latest and greatest gear. However, it’s important to sometimes step back and remember the furry friends that share our lives, and make sure that they are also properly outfitted for the winter. In my case, that meant ensuring my feline friend would stay warm during the cold months of the year.
Considering I adopted my cat Devushka after finding her wandering the streets of Moscow, you would think she would be well suited to a cold climate. Think again. Like all animals she is pretty smart and manages to consistently find the warmest place in my apartment, which apparently is my laptop. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn’t really like having a 9-pound ball of fur sitting on top it — the fans inside the computer go crazy and make all sorts of noises as it begins to overheat. Not to mention when she jumps off of it, she has occasionally removed a few of the keys, and it’s a bit difficult to write a story without using the letter “s” and “a.”
So, to keep both my Mac and cat happy, I finally broke down and purchased her the “Thermo-Kitty Fashion Splash heated cat bed.” I ordered the pink model, but alas, they were out of stock, so I had to revert to mocha. Based on the amount of time she spends sleeping in the bed (which is basically always, except when she is eating or sitting on me), I don’t think she really cares about the color.
The cat bed itself looks just like any other cat bed, except it has a small pouch underneath that contains a heating pad that plugs in, generating a nice warm surface that radiates throughout the contraption. The heating pad can be removed, allowing for the bed to be tossed in the washing machine, although I find it easier to use a vacuum cleaner (which also keeps my clothes from looking like I just rolled around on the floor at a barbershop).
I try to limit the time she stays plugged in to an hour or so at a time, and definitely unplug it whenever I leave the apartment. Even though she has been using it for several months, I don’t quite trust that the thing won’t spontaneously combust.
If you are lacking a pet this winter, go ahead and buy yourself a heated cat bed anyway. You can always pretend you are sitting in a luxury car with heated seats while watching television on the couch.
