In a recent story (“SG Interests acquires two new leases in Thompson Divide,” Aspen Daily News, April 2) the statement regarding Encana’s federal acreage that “large amounts of valuable mineral deposits were not likely associated with the acreage” was incorrect. Encana assigned its acreage in the Lake Ridge unit to SG Interests because it believes SG Interests is in the best position to develop the acreage, thereby allowing Encana to realize value from those leases. Encana fully supports the efforts of SG Interests in its pursuit of the formation of the Lake Ridge unit and subsequent drilling plans.
With regard to the two other leases in the Thompson Divide area, Encana has stated for several years that it has chosen to focus its efforts in its acreage position to the west of these leases. While Encana does not have current plans to develop these leases, it could still decide to develop them or another company could choose to take assignment of the leases.
