The Aspen Skiing Co. joined 33 other U.S. companies in signing on to a “climate declaration” urging federal policy makers to pass legislation to deal with global warming.
The signatories of the declaration are calling for Congress to address climate change by promoting clean energy, boosting efficiency and limiting carbon emissions. According to Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP) — an advocacy group that organized the declaration — the businesses that signed on have employed such strategies in their own operations and are reaping financial benefits.
“The cost of inaction is too high. Policy makers should see climate change policy for what it is: an economic opportunity,” according to a statement from Anne Kelly, Director of BICEP.
Other businesses signing on include eBay Inc., Nike, Limited Brands, IKEA, Jones Lang LaSalle and L’Oréal. Together, the signatories provide approximately 475,000 U.S. jobs and generate a combined annual revenue of approximately $450 billion.
Extreme weather events like Superstorm Sandy have affected several climate declaration signatories and exposed the United States’ economic vulnerability to climate change.
The Aspen Chamber Resort Association (ACRA) is inviting local businesses that are chamber members to reserve a spot at the ACRA booth for one Saturday during this year’s Aspen Saturday Market.
For the past few years, ACRA has purchased a booth at the market and offered the space to different members each Saturday, said Erik Klanderud, director of member services at ACRA. That way the local businesses have the chance to advertise and promote their goods, he said.
Each year, the list fills up quickly, so businesses are encouraged to sign up for a spot as soon as possible, Klanderud said. If all of the spots are reserved, there will be a wait list, he said.
The market runs every Saturday for 18 weeks during the summer and fall on Hopkins Avenue, Hunter Street and Hyman Avenue. This year’s market begins on June 15 and will end on Oct. 12.
