John Ostwald quacks like a duck about filmmaking in Aspen and Pitkin County (“Doing things our way,” Aspen Daily News, April 15). While I share his consternation about helicopters, they serve a purpose. They evacuate injured skiers, rescue people that get in over their heads in the middle country, ferry wealthy famous energy barons up and down Castle Creek and into the Raggads, plant lift towers for local ski areas, and provide ski tours up the Crystal near Marble.
Film shoots and commercials are a clean source of income for many of us locals, both long and short timers. The ski industry also provides income for other residents. I agree his peace and quiet are necessary, so when the Hollywood boys show up, I would be glad to call him so he can go to a quiet spot with that peaceful noise from that balloon overhead. I personally put balloons in the same category as helicopters; clutter in the sky. And I prefer the quacking of a duck to his duck-like quacking in the Aspen Daily News.
