We who work at the Aspen Recreation Center are very thrilled and appreciative of an opportunity we had this month. From April 1-5 we hosted a group of young men and women from the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic for the first ever kayaking instruction. This is a new addition to the event and was a great success.
Not only could we accommodate the veterans in the lap pool to learn new skills and try out several boats, including some used in the Paralympics, but participants had a great time in the hot tub, lazy river and warm pool. We had participants with all types of disabilities and service dogs. We are so grateful to our regular lap swimmers for accommodating this special experience.
The week was truly inspirational to the staff. We felt honored to host the men and women who served our country and were overwhelmed by their spirit in overcoming physical challenges. New dreams, new activities, and new goals were created in a fun and safe setting. We are looking forward to seeing the veterans next year and adding more water activities to the program.
