Orchid Show at the Jerome
Did you know that the number of orchid species on earth quadruples the total of mammal species and doubles the number of bird species on Earth?
The flowers of the orchid family, in all their fascinating aspects and resplendent beauty, take center stage at the Hotel Jerome this weekend at the first annual Orchid Show and Teach-In, presented by The Aspen Branch. The show runs Saturday and Sunday May 25 and 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It will include orchids galore, along with terrariums and bromeliad gardens for sale, and demonstrations by Aspen Branch’s design team. Presentations by the experts from Fantasy Orchids — a Louisville orchid nursery — are also planned. This event is free, with 15 percent of sales going to the Aspen Historical Society.

Annual Crawfish Boil in Basalt
We may be a long way from the bayou, but you wouldn’t know it this weekend in Basalt.
The Riverside Grill is bringing in a few hundred pounds of crawfish for its traditional Louisiana-style boil on Saturday, May 25. The boil runs from 5 until whenever the crawdads run out. Local band 3 Dollar Dewey plays the festivities, featuring Geoffrey Morris, Dave Johnson and Lee Dudley, and they’ll go until the food’s gone.
The boil includes crawfish, sausage, potatoes, corn and all the traditional fixings. It’s all y'all can eat for $24.95. For more information, call 970-927-9301
Tennis Open House
This weekend the Roaring Fork Valley is a veritable smorgasbord of outdoor activities, with Ajax open for skiing and the valley floor in full summer swing (more on that in this week’s Happenings column, page 5). But it also marks the opening weekend for the courts at the Aspen Golf and Tennis Club on Highway 82, with free court time Sunday, May 26.
From noon to 3 p.m. the club is offering a free serving clinic, time volleying with a ball machine, and open court time. Court rentals normally run $11 to $12 and ball machines $20, so if you’re looking to give your tennis game a test run this is the day to do it for free. For more information, call 970-429-2869
