Last Thursday the Republican governors denounced the actions of the federal government and took special pride in the achievements of their state governments. They ridiculed Obamacare as a disaster for the American people and the economy. Clearly there was no concern for the nearly 40 million of our fellow citizens without health insurance. The governors’ scathing attacks should have reminded many of us what Republicans proclaimed in the 1930s about Social Security and in the 1960s about Medicare. It is fortunate that presidents Roosevelt and Johnson had the vision to fight and win approval for these vital programs. As I sat listening to the governors, I wondered if they would carry their denunciation of the federal government to its ultimate. Would the Republican governors now agree to the destruction of Social Security and Medicare? Too bad the question was not addressed to them.
