The Rev. Jesse Jackson will make his debut in Aspen when he plans to participate in the American Renewable Energy Day (AREDAY) Summit, taking place Aug. 15-18.
The civil rights leader will deliver a keynote sermon that is open to the public on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 9:30 a.m. at the Doerr-Hosier center at the Aspen Meadows Resort. Jackson also will participate in an armchair discussion with media magnate and philanthropist Ted Turner at the AREDAY gala on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Doerr-Hosier center.
This marks the first time Jackson has spoken in Aspen, and the first time he and Turner have had a public dialogue together, according to a press release issued by AREDAY representatives.
Jackson’s keynote talk, “The Moral Imperative of Climate Action,” will focus on the opportunities provided by the environmental sector to reduce the high inner-city unemployment rate among black men. He will talk about ways to provide employees for the economic sector by getting these men involved in the clean tech and renewable energy fields. He also will address the obligation his generation has to ensure a sustainable future for young people.
The AREDAY gala includes the armchair talk between Jackson and Turner, as well as remarks by oceanographer, explorer and author Dr. Sylvia Earle.
Rev. Jackson is among 88 speakers at this year’s AREDAY Summit, which will include national and international leaders and authorities in science, energy, business, finance, government, education, entertainment, arts, sports and philanthropy.
AREDAY celebrates the 10th anniversary of its annual summit this summer. This year’s theme is “Advancing Clean Energy: Transition to a Sustainable Global Economy.”
AREDAY also presents the AREDAY Film Fest on Thursday, Aug. 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Paepcke Auditorium. On Sunday, Aug. 18, the free AREDAY Expo takes place in downtown Aspen on the Cooper Street mall, with music, demonstrations, exhibits and a 3 p.m. puppet show with IBEX Puppetry’s Heather Henson, daughter of Jim Henson.
This year’s title sponsors are The Turner Foundation, North American Power and Formula-E.
AREDAY, a project of the nonprofit 501c3 AREI, is a renewable energy networking event.
