The valley’s first and only BMX race track, located in Crown Mountain Park, is now open for public use. This undertaking, headed up by Roaring Fork BMX enthusiasts, was over a year in the making. Crown BMX park was planned, funded and constructed entirely from local sponsorships and donations and the extreme dedication and time commitment from a few “dirt dawgs” to make this a reality. The race track was built by a USA BMX track builder, consists of approximately 1200 feet of race track, a fully operational starting gate, many tabletops, turns, jumps and rhythm areas — it is quite a spectacle. The park held its first two races over the last few weeks and a huge turnout greeted the track operators. More than 75 racers attended the first race and 55-plus racers the second, which consisted of strider bike to adult races.
A huge thank you goes to the passionate guys from Roaring Fork BMX: Heath Johnson, Paul Viola and John Blatz (Clearwater Construction); without your drive, knowledge and extreme hard work, this park could not have been a reality so soon. The many hours of time you volunteered and donations and sponsorships you brought in are priceless. You continue to donate your time and efforts to this track. We cannot thank you guys enough for everything.
Thank you Aspen Dirt Bike School for all your efforts and assistance, especially with track operations and the camps you are holding here. It really makes this track a true asset to the community. To Travis Hughes and Hughes Excavating, who donated extreme quantities of great dirt, screened the dirt to an amazing quality for track building and donated many different types of equipment for our use; this park definitely would not have been constructed without you and your employees. Thank you again for everything you do for this community and continue to do.
To all the sponsors, whether your contribution was monetary or in-kind in nature, we could not have done this without you all. Thank you to Rudd Construction, Aspen Excavating, and Gould Construction for all of the dirt you deliverer in the fall of 2012. The guys from USA BMX were amazed by all the dirt we received. Thank you to Casey Concrete for donating the concrete for the starting hill and Custom Concrete for the project — I know it was a difficult pour, but you guys exceeded our expectations. To our many sponsors: the Lewis Family, Kissane Viola Design, Aspen Anesthesia, Blue Tent Marketing, Aspen Orthopedic Associates, Greg Mozian and Associates, David Moray, Tuttle Surveying, ZGtec, SkiCo, Alchemy Audio Video, and Wagner Rents — this was a true community effort and true community success story. Thank you again.
Looking ahead, there are still many sponsorship opportunities to complete the BMX park area. A pump track and enduro course are penciled in for construction this fall. Check out www.crownbmx.com for all information, including race information, schools and sponsorship opportunities. Any other questions, please call me at the Crown Mountain Park Office 963-6030.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out what can be achieved within a community when they all come together, the track is located in the west section of Crown Mountain Park, beyond the tennis courts. It is a public race track, free for all ages to use at any time outside of race times. Remember to bring your bike and helmet and be ready for a fast ride. It is the community’s to enjoy.
Cheers and happy riding.
