The saga of expanding the Snowmass Ski Area onto Burnt Mountain is all but over, although the federal government will be taking another look at a plan to remove trees from an exit road, and there could be another battle in the future should the Aspen Skiing Co. ever decide it wants to pursue a new chairlift in the area, which is included in its long-term master plan.

We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. The water is clean, the air is breathable and there are vibrant open spaces around us that support healthy ecosystems for all plants, animals and humans to enjoy. We are also very fortunate to live in a community where people come together and stand up for what is important to us, our way of living and sustaining it for generations to come. Now more than ever we must unite and let our voices be heard in order to maintain the vital environment we live in by protecting the Thompson Divide from oil and gas drilling.

In a recent letter to the editor Jim Donaldson waves good-bye forever to an Aspen that is no longer the Aspen of the ’40s through ’60’s that he loved (“It was fun while it lasted,” The Aspen Times, Feb. 22). He tells us how good it used to be, and how Aspen is now “mean and old.” Jim, don’t be so grumpy. What place in the world is as it was in the ’50s? It isn’t just Aspen that has changed Jim, the world has changed.
