Just over 1.3 million skier visits logged on the four mountains

Aspen Skiing Co.’s skier visits slipped 1.8 percent during the winter of 2011-12 over last year, the company announced Tuesday.

“The lack of snow brought the numbers down,” said SkiCo spokesman Jeff Hanle.

Unusually dry conditions and low snowpack in the mountains have primed the local forest for fires this summer, the top official for the White River National Forest told the Pitkin County commissioners on Tuesday.

“Everything is lining up for a fire season that could be very volatile,” forest supervisor Scott Fitzwilliams said.

Ohio educator chosen from national search

The Aspen School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to hire Ohio educator Kimberly Martin as the new principal of Aspen High School.

Martin, who boasts nine years of experience as a high school principal, is scheduled to officially take the post on July 2.
