Aspen Daily News Staff Report
Jan Garrett
Singer/songwriter

Family: Married to acclaimed songwriter JD Martin (also my business partner, artistic collaborator and sweetheart). Twin daughters Annie and Becky Garrett. A long line of soulful ancestors.

Hometown/Childhood: Grew up in Loveland, Colo., in the early Pleistocene Era, went to school in Boulder and France, have happily lived and created my music in the Roaring Fork Valley for a discreetly undisclosed number of years.

Hobbies: Laughing.

Role Models: Rumi and Mary Oliver, the Dalai Lama, Gary Larson (the Far Side), Ella, Aretha, The Beatles, Meryl Streep, Esther Hicks.

Motto: I'm thankful for everything and I have no complaints whatsoever.

First Job: At 4 years old, Sunday school class. (This was not a paying gig.) The teacher asked for poems or songs from the kids while we waited for cookies and Kool-Aid.  I launched enthusiastically into all five verses of "Cigarettes & Whiskey and Wild Wild Women."  I heard later that the reviews were somewhat mixed.

Career Highlight: Getting to write, sing and record music that opens the heart and refreshes the spirit.

Biggest Challenge in Your Line of Business: Marketing, fund raising. This is world-class music, deep and uplifting at the same time. How to get it out there? Ideas?
