Barbara Ingalls Shook died on Sept. 26, 2008, at the age of 69. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Paschal Shook; daughter, Ellen Gregg Shook; and stepsister, Jane Sevier Smith. Barbara is survived by her daughters, Elesabeth Ridgely Shook, Adele Shook Merck — daughter of Robert Shook — (George); sister, Elesabeth Ingalls Gillet; stepbrother Lathrop Winchester Smith (Garland); grandchildren George and Caroline Grace Merck; and nephew, Sam Boykin III (Lynn).
Although Barbara battled cancer all of her adult life, it never interfered with her achievements. She chaired the Barbara Ingalls Shook Foundation which supported her philanthropic endeavors that enriched the lives of many people. She was a member of Reagan’s National Cancer board, the Memorial-Sloan Kettering 1986 Woman of the Year, and a founder of Challenge Aspen which supports athletic activities for the handicapped.
Barbara became an avid skier, summer golfer, and an accomplished fly fisherman. She faced every obstacle with her faith, strength and determination. She was the personification of courage and charisma as well as an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be missed by her family and legion of friends everywhere.
