Aspen housing survey

To obtain a better perspective of needed improvements in the housing program, the Housing Authority Task Force is seeking the support of all affordable-housing owners to participate in a series of surveys. The surveys will be brief, to the point, and can be completed online or returned by mail, should homeowners wish anonymity.

The first survey is about the concept of “Trade Down,” i.e., an owner of a three- or four-bedroom employee unit would move to a one- or two-bedroom employee unit. The survey will be distributed to all affordable housing owners within the next few days and is due to the Task Force by Oct. 15.

Shutterbugs in training

The Basalt Recreation Department is teaming up with Gregg Adams Photography to offer an opportunity for kids to enjoy creating images in nature. This class is for ages 7-13 and will be offered after school on Thursdays through September.

For more information on this class call the recreation department at  927-8214.

Grass and leaf disposal

The Aspen Environmental Health department wants to remind everyone that grass and leaves are not allowed to be disposed of in the trash.   Residents may bring grass and leaves to the Rio Grande drop-off center or directly to the landfill. All other yard waste, including flowers, branches and soil, are still allowed to be disposed of in your regular trash, or may be taken directly to the landfill. For more information, call 920-5039.

Lead-testing

The city of Aspen’s environmental health department is distributing free lead-testing kits to Aspen residents throughout October in light of new lead safety measures set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission that will go into effect on Feb. 10.

After the February deadline, children’s products that contain more lead than 600 ppm are banned in the U.S. and retailers and manufacturers will need to destroy any toys and products that do not comply with new limits.

Those concerned about the safety of their children’s toys can log on to the Consumer Product Safety Commission Web site to check their recall or call 800-638-2772.
