Down to three for hospital board vacancy

The number of applicants vying for an open seat on the Aspen Valley Hospital board has been cut in half.

Chuck Frias, a real estate broker; Peter Laurus, a retiree; and Taylor Liebmann, a hospital volunteer, are the finalists, according to hospital election official Nell Strijbos-Arthur.

The hospital’s board of directors plan to interview the trio in public at Monday’s regular meeting.

A seat on the board opened when hospital treasurer John Jellinek abruptly resigned his position after his personal and business problems were reported in this newspaper. Jellinek, who has been accused of fraud and other transgressions, has denied all wrongdoing.

Originally, there were six applicants to fill Jellinek’s vacancy. Businessman Gerald Grayson, fitness expert Riggs Klika  and environmental attorney Albert Slap have been eliminated from consideration. Board members Dr. Barry Mink and Lee Schumacher made the cuts, and they will elaborate on their reasoning for them at the meeting, Strijbos-Arthur said.
