The Aspen High School football team was held to 157 yards total offense as it dropped its second game of the season in as many weeks, as it lost to Olathe on the road 36-7.

The Skiers found the end zone first as running back Beau Seguin scored on a 2-yard run with 1:28 remaining in the first quarter to give his team a 7-0 lead.

But after outscoring their first five opponents by a combined total of 229-12 and averaging nearly 300 yards a game, the Aspen offense fell flat and was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The Olathe offense, however, seemed to excel as it scored five unanswered touchdowns.

Twelve seconds into the second quarter, Olathe quarterback Garhett Jurgens scored on a 73-yard run to even the score at 7-7. Eight minutes later, Jurgens found the end zone again on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to put Olathe ahead 14-7 heading into half-time.

The Skiers’ defense struggled early in the second half as they surrendered three touchdowns in the third quarter. Jurgens threw a 27-yard touchdown and the Pirates converted a 2-point conversion to take a 22-7 lead with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter.

Olathe running back David Rhodes rambled for two touchdowns in the third quarter and the Pirates coasted to a 36-7 win.

With the win, Olathe (7-0, 4-0) stays tied atop the Western Slope 2A league standings with Grand Valley, while the loss drops Aspen (5-2, 2-2) into a three-way tie for third place with Cedaredge and Roaring Fork.

After setting personal bests in passing yards and completions the last three weeks, Aspen quarterback Anderson Cole turned in a modest performance, connecting on 7 of 16 passes for 101 yards.

Seguin, who entered the game with 1,070 yards of total offense and 16 touchdowns, was held to 31 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Nicky Ufkes led Aspen with 56 receiving yards.

Seguin paced the Skiers’ defense with 10 tackles, and teammates Tyler Bloom and Trevor Watson each added eight.

Aspen looks to get back on track next week when it hosts league rival Roaring Fork High School on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.
