Local fraud case outlasting O.J., The Unabomber
It took about 10 months to arrest, try and convict Claudine Longet for homicide in Aspen in 1976-77.
It was roughly 14 months from the day O.J. Simpson turned himself over to Los Angeles police to his acquittal and the conclusion of the Trial of the Century in 1995.
Martha Stewart’s obstruction of justice case: 10 months from indictment to trial to conviction.
Federal prosecutors worked 21 months to broker a plea deal with The Unabomber.
Longer than all those complicated criminal spectacles, however, is the ever-languishing case of the People of Colorado versus Peter J. Frommer, whose prosecution is nearing two years of age. Frommer was arrested in Woody Creek in February 2007 on fraud charges, and has been a fixture at the Pitkin County Courthouse’s twice-a-month felony settings ever since. He will appear in court yet again today.
Frommer’s case, if not resolved today, will surpass the duration of the prosecution of Enron chief executive Kenneth Lay for fraud and conspiracy.
Alleged scam artist Frommer, who long ago waived his Constitutional right to a speedy trial, faces 33 fraud-related felony charges stemming from a string of bad checks he allegedly wrote and complaints from investors in his telecommunications company that he allegedly bilked. The number of charges has tripled since his arrest.
He was set to stand trial this month, but it was canceled in September when he reached an agreement with the district attorney’s office through which he would plead guilty to a lesser charge or charges.
Part of the agreement, however, was that Frommer pay everyone to whom he owed money. His plea has been delayed since, as that condition has apparently not been met.
Before that, he was set to stand trial last May. However, as the trial date approached he said he had hired a private attorney. He was represented by the public defender’s office at the time, and said his new attorney would only take his case if given more time to prepare for trial.
That attorney — allegedly from Denver’s Haddon, Morgan, and Foreman — never made a court appearance on Frommer’s behalf.
He is currently represented by California-based Robert A. Koenig, who entered his first appearance for Frommer via telephone in June.
He has had three separate attorneys since his arrest, not including the no-show from Denver, and most of the time has been represented by the public defender’s office. Progress in the case was hamstrung for months last year when the public defender attempted to withdraw, claiming Frommer was not truly indigent and did not qualify for a taxpayer-funded defense. After his re-application was denied twice, a district court judge ruled that he was eligible for public representation.
Frommer is slated to enter a plea today. But if he has still not met the DA’s condition, he may be granted more time to pay off his debtors or he could move toward another trial date.
Stay tuned.

What is wrong with our system?
this is a great article that really describes the unfairness of the legal system. And to think that for months, we the taxpayer and victims had to pay for Peter Frommer's public defender. I am so thrilled that even with all the stalling techniques, the judge is not letting him off the hook. I hope he recognizes that this thief has stolen not only few hundred thousands from Aspen victims, but at least 22 Million Dollars from Los Angeles victims. Peter Frommer is a criminal and will continue to make fake empty promises, that is why its an eternal defender.
More than 30 felonies
Agreed. Thrilled that the liar is not fooling
the judge. This criminal needs major punishment.
Even though not yet in prison...I am happy knowing that he has to report to court 2x a month and I would guess has to seriously curtail his spending habits and his usual absurd conduct. In a way, he and his thug-wife are already in prison.
Eternal Victims
I read with pain and joy your article depicting Peter Frommer as The Eternal Defendant. He works very hard at that title and wears it as a badge of honor, all the while laughing at the Pitkin County Court system. He is doing the very same thing to Aspen that he has and is doing here in California with all the lawsuits and legal wrangles he has here. He's actually quite good at it.
It makes us all happy to also read that Judge Boyd would not accept his plea deal (talk about a sweet deal). But Judge Boyd was smart enough to see through Peter's empty promises. Praise him for that. You have to remember that there is $21M here in California that Peter has "promised' to pay, right before he left and went to Aspen...and here the story lies...he further victimized Aspen locals and got rapidly caught. It was this week exactly two years ago that Peter rolled into your town and wrote his first bad check and smooth talked The Hotel Jerome into two suites to the tune of $800.00 a night. The victims here were left unable to pay their own bills.
His 'promise' to pay is the exact way he works things. I hope the D.A. and the court realizes that he's a CONMAN for crying out loud. He's conned everyone here he owes money to (promises after promises) and now he's trying to con the court and citizens of Aspen. Hey, but those promises bought him at least 5 trial delays, right? And it seems more to come.
We all want to see righteous justice, but the length it is taking is wearing on all the victims watching.
Probation for this case (31 felony counts) is insane. Even for one count. The fact that Peter Frommer still owes about $100K to Aspen victims is sick...doesn't that mean that he's not only confirmed the actual basis for the indictments, but that he is prolonging the pain and suffering of his victims? Probation for that?
Hasn't he been promising to pay victims back for two whole years now? Will the mortgage companies of his victims wait that long?
What Peter is most famous for (besides writing bad checks) is buying time....let's hope his tactics buys him some time in your State Prison.
Yes, Frommer has hurt all of us Eternally
My own baby son was harmed by Frommer.
The money Frommer defrauded from us
was meant for our 2-yr old's college.
Instead Peter has hidden it or squandered it.
