Glenwood editor returning to Midwest

Randy Essex, the editor and publisher of the Glenwood Post Independent, is leaving the paper Dec. 1 to return to the Detroit Free Press, where he worked from 2006-11.

He said Monday in an email that he will be senior content director for business news and newsroom planning at the Detroit paper.

“It’s been a privilege to lead the PI and to get to know the people and communities in Garfield County,” he said. “I’m proud of the work we did while I was here, particularly on housing, transportation and immigration issues, which affect families’ lives every day.”

Essex was promoted to publisher in August 2016, while continuing to act as editor, the position he was hired for in May 2014. The Post Independent is owned by Swift Communications, which operates the majority of daily newspapers on the Western Slope.

Before that, Essex was senior editor at the Cincinnati Enquirer. Prior to his original stint at the Detroit Free Press, Essex worked at the Des Moines Register.

He minced no words in his columns, and Essex was also a familiar voice on Aspen Public Radio’s “Valley Roundup” news segment.

“Valley Roundup has been surprisingly fun,” he said Monday.

Aspen Times publisher Samantha Johnston, associate general manager of Colorado Mountain News and Swift Communications, is expected to launch a nationwide search for a new editor, Essex said.
