by Andrew Travers, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer

Transportation officials voted Thursday to continue subsidizing free bus service between Aspen and Snowmass Village, and between the Brush Creek intercept lot and Woody Creek, for the next three years.

The Elected Officials Transportation Committee (EOTC) voted 10-3 to keep the buses going. The EOTC consists of the Aspen City Council, Pitkin County commissioners and Snowmass Village Town Council. They jointly manage the proceeds from a .5 percent sales tax that funds transit.

Gem of the Week: Hay Park, Crystal River

by Andrew Travers, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer
Friday, March 19, 2010

This is the seventh and final entry in a weekly series profiling the areas proposed by the Hidden Gems campaign for federal wilderness designation. The campaign, led by Carbondale’s Wilderness Workshop, calls for approximately 380,000 acres to be protected as wilderness. Most of the land is in the White River and Gunnison national forests, and includes areas in Pitkin, Gunnison, Eagle and Summit counties. An act of the U.S. Congress is required to designate new wilderness. The campaign has drawn criticism from some outdoor recreationalists, because all mechanized use and development is barred in federal wilderness.

Lodge at Aspen Mountain deal off the table

by Curtis Wackerle, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer
Friday, March 19, 2010

The developers of the Lodge at Aspen Mountain and the Aspen Skiing Co. have formally severed their agreement that would have seen the lodge developers fund a new Lift 1A chairlift if the project is approved.

Centurion Partners — a California development company tied to Aspen Land Fund II LLC, which owns the South Aspen Street site where the lodge would be built — had offered up to $4 million to build a high-speed lift to replace the current chair on Aspen Mountain’s west side. Developers pointed to the promise as one of the potential community benefits that could be reaped if the lodge was approved. Citing scale, mass and community character issues, Aspen City Council denied the proposal in 2007, and a joint development plan with the Lift One Lodge, proposed for across the street, died on a tie vote before the council 15 months later.

DA: McFarlane departure shouldn’t hurt Sheen case

by David Frey, Aspen Daily News Correspondent
Friday, March 19, 2010

Chief Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin said he doesn’t expect the departure of Aspen police officer Valerie McFarlane to jeopardize the domestic violence case against actor Charlie Sheen.

McFarlane was a lead officer responding to the Christmas Day call in which Sheen’s wife, Brooke Mueller, called 911 and alleged Sheen had threatened to kill her at the West End home they were renting. As a responding officer, she would likely be a key witness if the case goes to trial.

Horoscopes

  • Aries
    • Make it OK to be moody, energetic, then tired. Take Sunday in the true meaning of the word -- as a day of rest or a break from the rat race. You need time off; you are not a machine. Tonight: Go for something relaxing and an early bedtime. This Week: Express your needs with the full expectation of being heard.

  • Taurus
    • Suddenly the quiet Bull could be raging, but hopefully just energized. A child or loved one responds to a serious talk -- finally. You are master of your own destiny. Start acting that way. Whatever makes you smile. Tonight: Beam in what you want. This Week: Blow into the week knowing that the world could be your oyster, if you so choose.

  • Gemini
    • Use the morning to call friends and catch up on news. You might want to take some time off for yourself later to read, write or maybe even tackle your taxes. Avoid commitments for now. Tonight: Screen your calls. This Week: Venus positions itself, giving you much more of the feelings you want.

  • Cancer
    • Your hectic pace could be taking a lot out of you, so it would seem this morning. By the afternoon, just being with friends invigorates you. Go off to a museum, a ballgame ... whatever you would enjoy. Tonight: Could be a late night. This Week: Others congratulate you on a job well done.

  • Leo
    • Take a hint from Gemini. Reach out for others in the morning. Make plans with an older friend or relative in the p.m. Do what this person would enjoy most. Try to avoid going to work, even if you feel your desk is spilling over. Tonight: A must appearance. This Week: Listen to the someone who has a lot to say -- boring possibly, but ultimately worthwhile.

  • Virgo
    • This morning a partner treats you to a delightful brunch or whatever would make you happy. If by yourself, you could feel lonely, which encourages you to step out and do something very different. Tonight: Opt for different. This Week: Look past the obvious before you act. Then you'll be a winner.

  • Libra
    • Others let you know what they expect and want. You could be overwhelmed by all that is going on around you. Your instincts are right-on; perhaps you need to isolate yourself from the crowds and hang with one friend.  Tonight: Dinner for two. This Week: Listen to news with an open mind. What you do could be a surprise, even to you.

  • Scorpio
    • Your imagination, when let loose, could get you in trouble, though others welcome trouble, in whatever form it takes. Let go of a problem. Surprisingly, it could resolve itself with less intensity from you. Tonight: Put your feet up. This Week: Others defer more often than not. Making decisions for others could be like being in the hot seat.

  • Sagittarius
    • Stay close to home if you can. Resist starting a new project or getting involved in someone's errands or need for help. The best you can do is relax and get ready for some hectic days coming. Tonight: Chill ... This Week: Work as much as you can, so that as the days go by, you feel freer and freer.

  • Capricorn
    • Getting what you want done could take a lot of effort. Listen to your inner vibes with a child or loved one. Let your guard down with this person more often -- like right now. Resist making a call to someone at a distance for a few days. Tonight: Let your ingenuity come out. This Week: Dance to a new tune. Listen to news. You have a lot of ground to cover.

  • Aquarius
    • Keep conversations flowing. Whether out or at home, you enjoy sharing the morning with those around you. Don't forget a sibling or neighbor. Use the afternoon just for you. Tonight: At home. This Week: Creativity and charm are an unbeatable combo. Try it this week.

  • Pisces
    • Curb impulsiveness, as it could cause you a problem if you aren't in control, perhaps later down the path. A friend seems to be changing his or her tune. Actually, this person is reflecting a deeper, more intrinsic change. Tonight: Where you want to
