Editor:
Given the kerfluffle that’s erupted over my letter to Basalt Chamber of Commerce President David Fiore — including a response from the Basalt Chamber in the form of a letter to the editor — I figured I should briefly explain to the public why I wrote to David in the first place.
My concern in writing the letter was not whether the question posed by the chamber is a matter of public concern. Although drafted in a convoluted way, it undoubtedly is.
But there are many, many other questions that are also important to Basalt. The issue for me, therefore, was that David, in his capacity as chamber president, helped frame the terms of the debate in a way that skewed the questions posed to the candidates towards topics bearing directly on his Sopris Chase project.
This struck me as inappropriate.
