The city of Aspen’s admits it could have used a better word in an advertisement taken out in local papers defending the Burlingame affordable housing project.

The ad in question, which ran in both newspapers recently, states that the city has built 84 housing units, a road, installed utilities to the site and is “constructing” seven single-family homes, all for $58.5 million, the total spent on Burlingame so far.

Lightning strike injures family of five

by Catherine Lutz, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer
Monday, July 7, 2008

Five members of an Idaho family felt the impact when lightning struck Sunday afternoon during their hike on the American Lake Trail up the Castle Creek Valley. Although none seemed to be critically injured, the two most affected were transported by a Flight for Life helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Denver, according to a sheriff’s deputy.

The family was about 1.5 miles — approximately halfway — up the steep, challenging American Lake Trail, whose trailhead is 11 miles up the Castle Creek Valley. When the lightning struck at approximately 1:45 p.m., all five family members were knocked to the ground, said Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Director Ann Stephenson.

Who needs advertising?

by Christine Benedetti, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer
Sunday, July 20, 2008

It’s like the separation of church and state — advertising and editorial departments at newspapers do not work together. But it’s a symbiotic relationship. Revenue comes from ads (especially at this paper, which is free and has no paid subscriptions). And without ads, there’s no newspaper. So when a paying advertiser gets a little pissed off about something, unfavorable coming to light about them in the pages of the Aspen Daily News, they sometimes pull their ads.

Throughout three decades the Daily News has been around, a fair share of advertisers have threatened to pull their accounts, sometimes indefinitely. Most come around, and it’s water under the bridge. But a few have stuck to their guns. Here’s a selection of the highlights:

Editor’s note: Daily News celebrates milestone

by Troy Hooper, Aspen Daily News Staff Writer
Sunday, July 20, 2008
It’s hard to believe, but the Aspen Daily News turned 30 this month.

Founders Dave Danforth, Lee Duncan and Mark Shaw began this paper on July 1, 1978, on what they say was a lark. Stringing together stories only a few sentences long or even shorter, they slapped their work on a double-sided single piece of paper and scrambled around town delivering what was at the time the town’s only daily “newspaper.”

THE SCORE — Hansel and Gretel’s popularity endures

by By Paul Thomason
Saturday, July 19, 2008
Part of the reason for the enormous, and continuing, popularity of Hansel and Gretel lies in its irresistible combination of the children’s naïve, folk-song-like music with the drama and power of a Wagnerian orchestra. The libretto by the composer’s sister considerably softens the hard edges and even terror that are found in the original fairy tale as told by the Brothers Grimm. But Humperdinck’s orchestra conveys a sense of darkness and mystery that saves the opera from being too cute.

“We’re taking a somewhat dark approach to the opera,” says Edward Berkeley, director of Aspen Opera Theater Center. “We’re setting it in post-Katrina New Orleans, so the world Hansel and Gretel are living in is a sort of uninhabitable world. The frustrations of the mother and father trying to survive, the struggle to survive for any of them, is beyond the pale.

DOW warns about increased bear activity

Aspen Daily News Staff Report
Saturday, July 19, 2008
Bear activity is picking up in residential areas in east Aspen, Red Mountain and Starwood, as their primary source of food — choke cherries and service berries — still have at least two weeks to ripen.

“People need to be more aware and lock their doors and windows,” said Kevin Wright, Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) wildlife manager for the Aspen district. “Their primary source of food isn’t ripe yet, and they are starting to follow their noses into people’s kitchens.”
