Beginning in the 1970s, Aspen City Council established two historic districts and a citizen-led Historic Preservation Commission to ensure the protection of Aspen’s oldest buildings as new development proliferated. Any new development along Main Street, in the downtown core, or involving one of 300 designated resources must get a green light from the commission.
