A dyeing art

Master weaver Elena Gonzalez Ruiz examines the progress of an all-natural cochinilla dye on a fresh batch of yarn at the Catto Center at Toklat near Ashcroft on Thursday afternoon. The dye is made from dried pomegranate skins, dried cochinilla insects and dried limes to create a soft, orange-colored yarn. Nearly every year since 1989 Elena has been traveling from her home in the Oaxacan region of Mexico each summer to be an artist-in-residence at Toklat.
