Aspen police are looking into two thefts from the Centennial apartments that occurred on Saturday night.

Someone stole an $800 coat from a vehicle in the affordable housing development’s parking lot and a snowboard was swiped off a resident’s front porch, according to Aspen police Sgt. Kirk Wheatley.

“It looks like someone did a little shopping up at Centennial [Saturday] night,” he said. “These are going to be under investigation.”

Wheatley said ski and snowboard thefts are a common report in Aspen, with victims believing their gear was taken from ski racks at the base of the mountain or outside the bar. Just as often as not, someone mistakenly took the equipment, thinking it was their own, Wheatley said.

That is not likely to be the case in the Centennial snowboard theft, he said. It serves as a reminder to lock your car and secure all valuables.
