Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS) and the Jake Foerster Music Arts Fund (JFMAF) recently announced a new partnership to increase the awareness and reach of the existing JFMAF Scholarship Fund, and to co-present new programming creating more opportunities for students to expand their interest in sound. The organizations this spring jointly awarded seven scholarships to students in Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.

On Saturday, May 19, the organizations will be launching a new event called “Sonic Showdown,”  presented in association with The Arts Campus at Willits (TACAW) at their interim home, The Temporary, in Basalt. It takes place from 2-5 p.m. and will showcase talented valley students in a variety of musical forms. Current acts scheduled include jazz and rock bands, DJs, rappers and more, according to a recent press release.

The event is free and open to the public.

An online auction to raise funds for future scholarships is open and may be accessed at jasstore.org. All items will also be available for bid at the “Sonic Showdown,” including a seven-night stay in Sayulita, Nayrit, Mexico. There will also be items from D’Angelico Guitar, High Society SUP, JAS Labor Day tickets and more, the release noted.

The Sonic Showdown is a reworking of the former JAS Band Battle, which for years was a popular annual spring event.

“We wanted to create an event like Band Battle that really opened up the range of music being offered. Instead of focusing on just bands, we are now opening up the experience to musicians of all types: instrumental, vocal and digital” stated Andrea Beard, Senior Vice President of Jazz Aspen Snowmass.

“We’re thankful to The Arts Campus at Willits for hosting this event at their amazing space. It’s such a great opportunity for students to have the experience of playing on a real stage,” she stated.

EJ Foerster, the executive director of JFMAF, noted, “The talent we have from Aspen to Rifle is truly amazing. I can’t wait to see these artists bring their A game to the stage”

Applications for participants are still being accepted. For more information or to apply, visit JAS at jazzaspensnowmass.org. Additional details on the event can be found at JFMAF at jakefoersterfund.org or The Temporary at tacaw.org.
